Trip Introduction

The trip package Manaslu Trekking consists of amazing views Manaslu Valley and Historical places of Kathmandu. In a single package, you will be able to enjoy the city of Kathmandu and Manaslu Region.

It is culturally fascinating with strong links to Tibet in the upper Buri Gandaki (called Nupri ‘the western mountains’) and the Tsum Valley, and even includes the Larkya La (5106 m) as a challenge. The views of Mt Manaslu, the eighth highest mountain in the world, are marvelous and spellbinding.

Manaslu Trekking can be done more conveniently these days because there are several lodges available all along the route. There are even phone and mobile access in some parts of the trekking trail. Nearly every village now has a proper lodge. You can certainly find porridge, tsampa, noodles, omelet and roti at most places. While simple, they are clean for the most part. There are also small shops in most villages along the way with limited stocks of soap, toilet paper, batteries, bottled water, biscuits, noodles, beer, whiskey etc.

Among the trips to Nepal, this is the absolute highlight, with strong, friendly, hospitable people, living Buddhist culture and untouched wildlife because of Buddhist prohibitions on hunting. The people are poor since they have been bypassed by development for centuries, but this means their unique culture has remained intact.

A special Restricted Area Permit is required for Manaslu Trekking. In addition, you will need to pay both the Manaslu Conservation Area Park (MCAP) fee and the Annapurna Conservation Area Park (ACAP) fee for the section from Dharapani to Besi Sahar after you join the round-Annapurna trail. All of these permits are covered in your tour price of Manaslu Trekking so you don’t need any extra money for these permits.

Ultimate Manaslu Trekking experience is rich with what you have expected to get enjoying the mountain range and beauty of Kathmandu City.

Your guide will pick you up at 8:00 am and we will start our 8-hour drive to
Arughat. The first four hours to Dhading Besi, the district headquarters of Dhading (1050m), is on paved roads, but for the section to Arughat, we will be driving on a rougher surface. From Arughat we drive another 1.5 hrs to Soti Khola by public jeep.

  • Day 2: Soti Khola to Machha Khola (900m/2952ft)

After crossing the Machha River and Khrolabesi, we will pass through the hot springs at
Tatopani. The trail follows a forested area until we cross Dovan Khola. We then make our way
to Budhi Gandaki Valley. As the elevation increases, the scenery undergoes a complete transformation, with white sandy areas along the riverside.

  • Day 3: Machha Khola to Jagat Checkpoint (1340m/4395ft)

After crossing the Machha River and Khrolabesi, we will pass through the hot springs at
Tatopani. The trail follows a forested area until we cross Dovan Khola. We then make our way
    to Budhi Gandaki Valley.

As the elevation increases, the scenery undergoes a complete transformation, with white sandy areas along the riverside.

  • Day 4: Jagat to Deng (2095m/6871ft)

Today we will scramble steeply up into a spectacular trail before descending to cross the river.
We pass through some small settlements and then climb to an impressive valley. There we will
encounter Mani stones (prayer stones) carved into wayside rocks – a sign that we are entering
    Tibetan territory.

  • Day 5: Deng to Namrung (2900m/9512ft)

Today’s trail passes through Ghap (2380m). We will be walking through west of Budhi Gandaki and crossing some waterfalls and Sringri khola on a funky suspension bridge. The trail then climbs steeply and traverses above Budhi Gandaki. The trail passes through a Kani with intricate, well-preserved paintings. On the trail, we may encounter some colourful birds including Dhafe. The trail climbs alongside the river, past two long Mani walls and the waterfalls. As we cross the Rhododendron forest before finally reaching Namring, we will be able to spot grey Langure monkeys swinging from branch to branch.

  • Day 6: Namrung to Samagaon (3500m/11480ft)

Beyond Namrung, the trek enters into upper Nupri where the dialect changes to a form of Tibetan style and most people dress in chubas, the Tibetan style of wrapping around cloak. The trail leaves the village through a Kani and makes a long sweep into a wooded canyon and crossing the Hiran Khola on a double span cantilever bridge. One can now capture a spectacular sight of Manaslu, Manaslu North (7157m) and Naike Peak (5515m).

The trail will pass through Lho (3080m), Syala (3350m) and we will have to cross a ridge and trek in and out of the canyon of the Thosang khola. We will then descend onto a rock-strewn moraine and reach Sama Gaon.

  • Day 7: Acclimatization day at Samagaon

Today we can visit the Pungyen Gumba. We’ll enjoy the sight of thousands of mani stones with Buddhist texts and pictures and the Sherpa women clad in traditional clothes and ornaments. On a little hill near the Sama village is an old Gompa (Pungyen Gompa), a monastery with great views of the glacier.

  • Day 8: Samagaon to Samdo (3690m/12103ft)

As we continue on with our trek, the valley begins to widen. The route is an easy trail on a shelf above the river past juniper and birch forests and the stone huts of Kermo kharka. From a stone arch, you will be able to see a large white Kani. It gives an illusion of being close but will take you a long time to reach the Kani before reaching Samdo. Samdo is at the junction of three valleys.

  • Day 9: Samdo to Dharmashala (4450m/14596ft)

The trail descends into a wide, gentle land from Samdo, past many fields to a large Mani wall and a stone archway. After more than an hour of walking the trail becomes indistinct. We will be staying high on the trail that crosses the top of the two large ravines. Watch for the unique blue sheep as the trail gets steeper and climbs the side of a ridge to about 4460m.

  • Day 10: Dharamsala to Bimthang (3720m/12, 201 ft)

The trek today will test one’s endurance level and patience. We will trek to Bhimthang by crossing the Larkya pass. It might take 4 to 5 hours from Dharmasala to Larkya La and it is recommended to make an early start in order to cross the pass safely. It can be extremely cold and windy during the climb. However, the views are tremendous.

The peaks seen to the west of the pass are Himlung (7030m), Kanggure (6981m) and Annapurna Second (7937m). The trail then descends along the top of a moraine to the west and drops steeply and traverses screed slopes to alongside a set of steep, rough switchbacks. Once off the top the trail crosses the moraine and descends more gently. The trail becomes easier, descending along the grassy moraine to a small meadow. The trail heads down to a large meadow, a Mani wall and a small rest house; we reached Bhimthang, which in Tibetan means “Plain of Sand”

  • Day 11: Bimthang to Dharapani (1860m )

We will walk south below Bimthang behind the moraine wall for some time before crossing the Bhimtang Glacier. We will climb up the far moraine wall quickly to avoid stone-fall and enter some of the best forests in Nepal.

With the gentle riverside walking to Karche (2700m) we take lunch after about 3.5hrs.

In the next hour we will see many signs of a glacial flood, with tree trunks smashed and banks undermined – the track becoming quite rough. We will climb steeply over a ridge and drop to Gurung Goa (2560m), the first real village since Samdo.

Then we will go towards Dharapani (1860m) and we will rest in one of the hotels at Dharapani.

  • Day 12: Dharapani to Kathmandu (1400 m)

We will come back to Kathmandu in a jeep via Besi Sahar as we enjoy the beautiful scenery of rice fields, terraced farms, rivers and valleys and refreshing views of the hilly areas and mountains.

After a few hours’ journey we reach Kathmandu where we will spend the last night in Nepal.

Honest in arranging, professional in executing!! We found Nepal Lion Tours online and decided to book through them given their great reviews. We were not disappointed. From arranging our trip to Manaslu (which I would thoroughly recommend) , to picking us up at the airport and then onto the 10 day walk the guys were great. We had a phenomenal time during our 10 day walk - Binod , Nikesh "Picass" and "Razenger" were knowledgeable and hard working looking after us, walking with us and ensuring we were ok during the whole time. I would have no hesitation in recommending Nepal Lion Tours if you are interested in seeing or walking any bit of Nepal.

We went with a group of 5 friends to Nepal for 2 weeks. Shiva help us customize a 12-day trek around Manaslu. It was amazing -- blooming rhodedendrons, baby yaks, and a chance to experience the local culture. Our guide Binod and assistant guide Raj took awesome care of us, recommending on-the-fly changes to our itinerary to make sure we crossed the Larkhe pass safely and stayed on schedule without running into too much weather. If we go back to Nepal, we will definitely be booking with Nepal Lion again!

An excellent and demanding trek, after the long journey to start and return on some harrowing jeep/bus rides. A wonderful experience overall, and good choice of trek as it is not inundated with tourists”
